Overview
A fad (流行, ryūkō) is something that spreads to the majority of people at least for a period of time. A fad may become established as it is, but it often becomes obsolete in a flash.
Also, once a fad has died out, it is often revived. For example, yo-yos were popular in the Edo period and the early Showa period, respectively, followed by the third boom triggered by Coca-Cola's sales promotion in the 1970s, the fourth boom in the 1980s with the Sukeban Deka. The fifth boom was triggered by Bandai's Hyper Yo-Yo in the 1990s.
