Overview
The A110 is a high-performance sports car produced by Alpine. The first model was produced from 1961 to 1977.
Known for its sleek design, powerful engine, and exceptional handling. This vehicle embodies a perfect blend of style and speed, making it a thrilling choice for driving enthusiasts.
History
The A110 originated in the 1950s when Renault dealer Jean Redele pursued his rally-driving dreams. He modified a Renault 4CV to win multiple rallies, achieving 15 victories, including the Liège-Rome-Liège and the Mille Miglia.
Redele then developed the prototype Alpine, known as the A106, using components from his 4CV. Over 200 units were produced in both coupe and convertible styles. This was followed by the A108, which utilized parts from the Renault Dauphine and was initially offered as a cabriolet before a hardtop version was released.
In 1962, with the sportier Renault 8 introduced, Alpine built the A110, combining features of its predecessors. Even today, the A110 impresses with its design and performance. It has a steel backbone chassis and a fiberglass body, along with engines sourced from the Renault 8, including 1.1L, 1.2L, and 1.3L inline-four models.
By 1964, production was limited to two cars per week, but by 1968, increased demand led to a new factory producing six to eight cars daily. In 1966, Alpine entered five prototypes into the 24 Hours of Le Mans, achieving a remarkable 1-2-3 finish while using the least fuel.
After Renault acquired Alpine, the A110 faced significant challenges, including competition in the World Rally Championship, where it achieved eight wins from 13 events since 1973. However, the energy crisis and declining sports car sales prompted tough decisions, leading to the development of the less successful A310 and the eventual end of the A110.
Second-generation A110
Unveiled at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the 21st-century Alpine A110 captures the spirit of the legendary machine while offering a new driving experience suited for real-world conditions. Designed for performance rather than straight-line speed, this car is intended for serious drivers.
The new A110 is remarkably lightweight, featuring a rigid aluminum chassis and interior components significantly lighter than those in typical cars, resulting in an overall weight of approximately 2,432 lbs.
Under the hood, the A110 is powered by a turbocharged 1.8L inline-4 engine that generates 248 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in just four and a half seconds, with a top speed exceeding 250 kph. The suspension system includes double wishbones at all four corners, enhancing its handling capabilities.
