Overview

Pikmin (ピクミン, Pikumin) are strange bipedal creatures, neither plant nor animal, that lives on PNF-404, the planet where Captain Olimar crashed. They are about 2 cm tall.

Its namesake comes from Olimar, who says that it resembles its hometown food, the pikpik carrot.

The official origin of the name is not "pick me," but rather "pikki," which is easier to pronounce overseas.

They reproduce as a species by carrying dead enemies and pellets as nutrients into their mother called an onion, a swarming organism with an ant-like ecology.

The power and vitality of each individual is minuscule, and they die easily when exposed to threats to which they are not resistant, such as attacks (see Pikmin Mortality for details). The number of Pikmin deaths can also be checked at the end of the day and after the ending. This leads some to believe that Pikmin's soul has returned to onion.

Olimar leads the crew by the sound of whistles and by throwing projectiles at the target. In addition, they bring parts, treasures, fruits, etc. to the S.S. Dolphin spaceship at the request of the leader.
