Yakuza (Tag name: ヤクザ), are members of traditional organized crime syndicates in Japan.

Also known as Gokudo

The Japanese police, and media by request of the police, call them bōryokudan (暴力団), literally "violence group", while the yakuza call themselves "ninkyō dantai" (任侠団体 or 仁侠団体), "chivalrous organizations". The yakuza are notorious for their strict codes of conduct and very organized nature. They are very prevalent in the Japanese media and operate internationally with an estimated 80,900 members in 2009, the last year for which an estimate is available.

Yakuza is often seen in dramas and sometimes anime. Examples of Yakuza themed drama ranged from "Sailor Fuku to Kikanjyuu" to "Minami no Teiou" or animes like Seto no Hanayome, also revolved around yakuzas as the theme of the show.
