Atemi (当身 or 当て身) is a Japanese term for martial arts technique designed to quickly cause unconsciousness or fainting in the victim.
The techniques vary quite a bit: a blow to the solar plexus (a nerve point below the chest cleavage), a chop to the back of the neck, a pinch to specific nerve points. The end result is that the victim is quickly or even instantly knocked unconscious.
In a few cases (typically from solar plexus blows), victims might persist for several seconds before they pass out, depending on their endurance and the assailant's strength.
