Backbeard is an American monster designed by Shigeru Mizuki.

There are no such monsters in American legends, and the monster is thought to be Mizuki's creation. The name is derived from the British monster Bugbear, and the design is thought to have been inspired by the work of photographer Masatoshi Naito or French painter Odilon Redon.

He appears in ``GeGeGe no Kitaro'' as the main character of Western monsters. They were once thought to be monsters originating from American folklore, so they often appear in other people's creations. It has also appeared as an enemy in special effects movies such as ``Henshin Ninja Arashi'' and ``Chojin Vibune'' and games such as ``Akumajo Dracula: Cross of the Blue Moon''.
