Ghost in the Shell (攻殻機動隊, Kōkaku Kidōtai, lit. Mobile Armored Riot Police) is a science fiction manga by Masamune Shirow, a manga artist born and living in Kobe City, published in Kodansha's Young Magazine pirate edition. Set in a cyberpunk-like near-future Japan where cybernetic technology and computerization have become commonplace, this science fiction political action manga depicts the activities of the Public Security Section 9, a public security police agency led by the main character Motoko Kusanagi.
