Overview
Kodansha (講談社, Kōdansha) is a major general publishing company in Japan.
Based in Otowa, Bunkyō ward, Tokyo, Kodansha publishes magazines, literary books, manga books, paperbacks (Bunkobon), Shinsho, non-fiction, academic books, children's books, practical books, collected editions and dictionaries.
The company also presides over many literary prizes.
Founded in 1909 as Dai Nippon Yūben Kai (大日本雄辯會, 'Great Japan Eloquent Association'), it was renamed Dai Nippon Yūben Kai Kodansha in 1911 and changed its name to the current company in 1958.
Kodansha is one of Japan's major general publishers along with Shogakukan, Shueisha (Hitotsubashi Group) and Kadokawa, and forms the Otowa Group with Kobunsha, Nikkan Gendai and others under subsidiary companies.
