    Benesse (ベネッセ, Benesse) originally was a publishing company called Fukutake Publishing (福武書店, Fukutake Shoten), founded in January 1955 in Okayama City. The company began by contracting to produce student handbooks for junior high schools and high schools (it is still contracting as of 2021).

    In 1994, the company moved its headquarters to Tama City, Tokyo (although the registered headquarters is still in Okayama City) and changed its name to Benesse in 1995.
