Overview
Square Enix (スクウェア・エニックス, Sukuwea Enikkusu) is a Japanese game company formed in 2003 through the merger of Enix and SquareSoft (As known as in America). The company specializes in the production of role-playing games such as the Dragon Quest series and Final Fantasy series. The company also produces games in many other genres.
The merger caused quite a stir in the industry, especially since Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy were two of the most popular JRPGs in Japan.
In October 2008, Square Enix was spun off into a holding company structure. Square Enix since then has been the operating company that was spun off.
