Kanata Izumi (泉かなた) is a minor character from the current ongoing 4-koma manga Lucky Star, the late mother of Konata Izumi.

The Matriarch of the Izumi Family, being the late wife of Soujiro Izumi and the late mother of Konata Izumi. She is the sister-in-law of Kobayakawa Yuki and, in the eyes of Narumi Itaru, Narumi Kiyotaka and Kobayakawa Yutaka, she is their bloodless aunt.

She is already deceased and mainly appears in Soujiro's recollections or as a ghost visiting her family.

She and her daughter Konata are almost identical, to the point that Kagami and others often mistake her for her daughter in family photos. One way to distinguish each other is that Kanata lacks the ahoge and the mole under her eye that Konata inherited from her father. Not only that, but she's 1 cm taller than Konata, her eyes have larger highlights, and her hair and skin are expressed in a slightly lighter tone, this feature being particularly obvious in the anime.

It is mentioned that she and Sojiro were childhood friends and moved to Tokyo together from the Ishikawa Prefecture until she finally settled residence in Saitama to support Soujiro's dream of becoming a writer. Before his death, she called him So-kun.

(In the anime version, Soujiro is holding Konata with a dummy in his mouth in front of the Buddhist altar where Kanata's portrait is displayed, suggesting that it was about one or two years after Konata was born.)

At the time of her passing, she left behind a note saying that she was happy, and even today she warmly watches over the Izumi family from heaven.

Konata wonders why she fell in love with her father (Sojiro), but Sojiro says it is because he "knows that I am in love with Kanata the most", and Kanata fully agrees when she hears this affirmation during one of her visits.

In addition, although she wishes for her daughter Konata "not to inherit her height and develop Soujiro's personality", Konata has successfully inherited both traits. Despite this, she still loves her daughter nonetheless.

During one of her visits, she sneaked into a family photo shoot to give them a surprise and was mistaken for a ghost, leading to an attempted exorcise by Konata and Soujiro.

She is portrayed as a transparent ghost wearing a long white dress, often with angelic white wings and an aureola in illustrations.

In illustrations on pixiv, many works depict her as being alive and living happily with her husband and daughter, being resurrected and having a heartwarming reunion with her family, especially Konata, or hanging out with the other Lucky Star mothers Hiiragi Miki, Takara Yukari, and Iwasaki Honoka.

She has also returned home to Obon and attended the Obon Festival as a spirit.

Although she is not described as a 'Lolita' in any particular way, her petite physique, youthful appearance and the style of the original manga and anime often lead to her being treated as a legal Lolita on pixiv.

Incidentally, Soujiro and Konata were originally set up as a 'father-son family whose mother died early', but the identity of the mother was not determined until after the serialization of the manga was decided. The name itself is a pun on 'Konata', but it is also a pun on 'Konata', which is a pun on 'Konata' (*If you read it more deeply, it can be taken to mean 'living Konata' and 'dead Kanata'), and is connected to the title of the anime episode 22, 'Koko ni Aru konata' (Here and There).
