Nichijou (日常) is a Japanese word for everyday life, it is also the title of a 2006 manga by Keiichi Arawi and its 2011 anime adaptation.

Overview

Nichijou (日常, Nichijō) is a Japanese comedy manga by Keiichi Arawi. The manga began its serialization in the December 2006 issue of Kadokawa Shoten's manga magazine Monthly Shōnen Ace; Comptiq between the March 2007 and July 2008 issues and also 4-Koma Nano Ace (Currently vol.1).

An anime adaptation by Kyoto Animation began airing in Japan in April 2011. This anime also includes scenes from Arawi's other manga, Helvetica Standard. A PlayStation Portable game by Kadokawa Games was released in July 2011.

The series follows the lives of a group of high school students and their school. Various oddities and absurdities abound, such as a robotic girl made by an eight-year-old scientist, a farmer boy who rides a goat to school with his butler, a girl who can procure various (harmless) guns and other artillery out of thin air, a cat that can speak with the help of an scarf and a principal who has wrestled a deer.

Despite its bizarre settings and characters, the students still lead normal lives.

The name of the anime, which means "ordinary life" may seem ironic, as the strange or random events and situations are often impossible. However, the weird events can also be seen as emphasizing the beauty and strangeness of everyday life's little details.
