Models
First Generation: SA22C Type (Also known in Japan as Savanna RX-7)
- It was first announced by Mazda during the supercar boom in March 1978.
Second Generation: FC3S Type (Still called Savanna RX-7 in Japan)
- Announced in October 1985, this is the second model of RX-7, superseding the SA22C.
- It is the vehicle of Ryousuke Takahashi in Initial D.
- It is the base vehicle of Ridron from Kamen Rider Black RX and Magno from Masked Rider.
- Also has a convertible model (announced a year after production of the FD model began).
Thrid Generation: FD3S
- Announced in October 1991, it is the third model of RX-7. At first it was sold in Japan as an Ẽfini brand car, "Ẽfini RX-7" (before Type 4).
- It is featured as Keisuke Takahashi's vehicle in Initial D, Shota Jinnouchi's vehicle in Summer Wars, and Miwako Sato's vehicle in Case Closed.
- The tall lamps were changed in Type 4.
- On October 1997, the Ẽfini brand was integated into Mazda, so the FD3S was sold in Japan as "Mazda RX-7" as it already was worldwide before its end of production in August 2002, due to not meeting emission regulation requirements.
※The RX-8, which begin its production after the RX-7, was not the true successor to the RX-7, but a completely new car model according to Mazda.
