The Type FD3S RX-7 was announced by Mazda in October 1991, and sales in Japan started in December of the same year.
The FD3S no longer use the "Savanna" naming, and it was released in Japan as a Ẽfini brand car, "Ẽfini RX-7". Later in 1998, the car was later sold as "Mazda Rx-7" as a result of Mazda unified both Ẽfini and Eunos brands as Mazda brand.
The development code of this model is X105.
The FD3S has a 1.3 litre sequential twin-turbocharged rotary engine. The engine in the Type 1 of FD3S model only produces 255 PS (251 hp) of engine power, but with Type 4 it was increased to 266 PS (262 hp) and then 280 PS (276 hp) with Type 5. The engine's desination code is 13B-REW.
Seven of RX-7 Type 4 cars were introduced as radar-equipped high-speed police cars and being used by Miyagi, Niigata, Tochigi, Gunma, Saitama, Chiba and Kyoto local polices in 1998 to 1999.
The production run of this model ended in 2002 due to not able to meet Japan's stricter vehicle emission regulation requirement, as well as low demands for sports car in Japan and overseas.
The last car that was produced in August 26, 2002, was a titanium gray metallic-colored RX-7 Spirit R Type A car model.
It was stayed as Mazda's only rotary-engine-equiped sports car until the RX-8 was introduced.
