The Douglas TBD-1 Devastator was an American Torpedo Bomber that saw action during the early stages of the Pacific War in 1942.
Combat Service
During the Battle of the Coral Sea, TBDs were able to help sink IJN Shoho but failed to score any hits on the IJN Shōkaku. No TBDs were lost in combat until the Battle of Midway due to IJN pilots being focused on the SBDs and Wildcats. At Midway, the TBD's slow speed and poor protection led to heavy losses. Due to this, it was replaced by the Grumman TBF Avenger after Midway.
