Wong Fei Ying

Her name is Wong Fei Ying.

Wong Fei Ying, the youngest daughter of a wealthy family in the bustling village, had everything a girl could wish for—fine clothes, luxurious meals, and the best education money could buy. Yet, none of these fancy things caught her interest. Instead, Fei Ying had an unusual passion: street fighting.

Ever since she was a teenager, Fei Ying roamed the back alleys and rough neighborhoods, seeking out challenges and fights. Despite having no formal training in martial arts, she had never lost a single street brawl. Her fighting style was wild, unpredictable, and full of sheer brute strength. People in the streets feared her, but not for her skill—they feared her because she fought like she had nothing to lose.

Fei Ying earned herself a reputation among the local thugs and street fighters. To them, she was a mysterious, fearless fighter. She always believed herself to be a true kung fu master, though she never had a single lesson. Whenever someone asked about her style, she'd proudly say, "I am a master of my own kung fu." What she lacked in technique, she made up for with confidence.

Her victories piled up, but so did the whispers. People began to call her “Useless Kung Fu” behind her back. They said she only won because she had never faced a true martial artist, and that her confidence was misplaced. Fei Ying, however, was blissfully unaware of these murmurs, convinced that she was unbeatable.

One day, while roaming the marketplace, Fei Ying heard of a wandering kung fu master who had arrived in village. The master was said to be skilled in various martial arts styles, and Fei Ying’s curiosity burned. She sought out the master, wanting to prove that even she, without formal training, could defeat a true martial artist.

Fei Ying found the master, a woman named Yao Qing, in a small courtyard. Without hesitation, she challenged him to a fight. The crowd that gathered snickered, knowing Fei Ying’s overconfidence and lack of real skill. Master Yao Qing accepted with a calm smile.

The fight began, and Fei Ying charged recklessly as she always did, her long black braid swinging behind her. But this time, things were different. Every punch she threw was easily dodged, every kick she attempted was blocked with the simplest of movements. Master Zhang didn’t even break a sweat.

After just a few moments, Fei Ying found herself flat on the ground, confused and embarrassed. She had never encountered such a smooth, effortless defense. It was as though she was fighting a ghost—nothing landed, and all her power seemed to disappear.

The crowd whispered louder now. "Useless Kung Fu," they muttered.

Fei Ying stood up, her face flushed with both anger and realization. For the first time in her life, she had met someone who showed her what real kung fu was. She wasn’t the master she thought herself to be. Her victories had been nothing more than luck and brute strength.

But instead of feeling defeated, Fei Ying bowed deeply to Master Yao Qing. “Teach me,” she said, her voice trembling not from fear, but from newfound respect.

Master Yao Qing looked at her with kind eyes and smiled. “You have spirit, young one. But spirit alone is not enough. Let’s see if you’re willing to learn.”

From that day on, Wong Fei Ying’s journey truly began. No longer the street fighter full of misplaced confidence, she was now determined to learn the art of real kung fu. And while the title “Useless Kung Fu” still echoed in her mind, she knew that with hard work and humility, she could transform it into something more—something real.

And so, the girl who once believed herself to be a master, began the long road to becoming a true martial artist.
