Sex (性, sei) is a term with varied meanings such as the activity done for procreation or pleasure, sex difference, or ones identity with sexual attraction or gender. The words sex and gender have been use interchangeably among many years but there seems to be a distinction as of late:

• Sex: What you get assigned as from various biological determinants.
• Gender: Ones identity through societal roles on sex or how a person identifies themselves.

Despite this the words can mean one another in many ordinary speech.

The Japanese kanji in this article can refer to a person's instincts, nature, temperament, sex, sexual desire, inner heart, and life.
