Usually a female member of a cheering team.
Wearing matching clothes, dancing to the music and waving pom poms.
It is common to wear a skort (pleated miniskirt) on a trainer-type uniform.
At sports days, there are also disguised cheerleaders who wear gakuran skirts (or gakuran themselves) and wave their pom-poms to the beat.
It looks gorgeous, but like baton twirlers, it requires intense athletic ability (exceptions are unreasonable rules from kindergarten to elementary school, and those that do not involve exercise).
Also, there is Ōendan(応援団), Cheer Squad/Team, to which males also participate.
In addition, there are teams with males, in which case they are organized as a mixed team of men and women, called co-ed, but the number of teams is not so large.
One of the few famous teams is the Nihon Bunri University Cheerleading Club and Chiba Lotte Marines' official cheer performer (cheerleading) team "M☆Splash!!".
Cheerleaders will perform to motivate sports teams, entertain spectators or compete.
