Maids (メイド, mēdo) can refer to a female servant who performs domestic labor such as cleaning, laundry, and cooking, mainly in aristocratic residences. In a large house, many maids are employed, and those who supervise them are called housekeepers.
Now maids, in the contemporary Western world, can refer to anyone in this servant role but mainly just as cleaners. Usually they are part of a agency (housekeeping service) for the few households can afford it.
