Overview
A mobile phone (携帯電話, keitaidenwa) is small telephone that can communicate over long distances while moving. Radio waves from the phone are routed through a base station, allowing calls to be made to other cell phones or general subscriber phones.
Since digitization, in addition to voice calls, it is now possible to send and receive short messages and e-mail, and connect to the internet. Today's smartphones can do just about anything, depending on the application, and are essentially general-purpose computers that can be connected to a phone line.
It is often abbreviated as cell phone.
