Overview
A novelist (小説家, Shōsetsuka) is a person or group of people who write and publish works of fiction on an ongoing basis. A novel today refers to new works written by authors other than classics such as myths and fairy tales, and nonfiction works such as newspapers, biographies, and reviews, and novelists are in the business of publishing original stories.
Novels in Japan originated in the Heian period (794-1185) in the upper classes, such as Murasaki Shikibu, and were only passed around among the upper classes and did not lead to income. At that time, there were only doujinshis, so to speak, and commercial publishing did not exist.
