Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus, スイカ, Suika) is an annual fruit in the Cucurbitaceae family. It is cultivated like a vegetable.
It is native to the arid regions of Africa. It has yellow flowers and large fruits. The most common skin color is green with black (or dark green, to be exact) stripes, but there are also dark green watermelons and watermelons with yellow skin. The inside of the fruit is red or yellow, watery and sweet. The shape of the fruit is generally round in Japan, but in Europe and the United States, the long, large-bodied variety (in essence, a large oval-shaped fruit) is common.
