The AE86 refers to the 4th generation Corolla Levin/6th generation Sprinter Trueno models that are equipped with 1.6L DOHC engine.
The AE86 is the small, lightweight FR sports car that is, initially, very famous only in drifting community. That is until the serialization of the popular manga and anime Initial D that makes the AE86 more popular.
The engines are different between regions:
- in Europe and Japanese models, it has the 4A-GEU engine which can produces 120 ps (118 bhp).
- in America models, the variant known as 4A-GEC, was used instead.
The engines were mated either 5-speed manual gearbox or automatic gearbox.
Due to aforementioned Initial D, the AE86 now has the high resale price, making it harder to purchase.
In 2009, a concept car that is co-developed by Toyota and Subaru, known as FT-86, was unveiled. Later in 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, both Toyota and Subaru unveiled the concept car's mass production version's name as 86 (for Toyota) and BRZ (for Subaru).
The production of both cars starts in 2012.
