It consists of Hainan Island and its attached islands located south of the Leizhou Peninsula in Guangdong, China. The Xisha, Nansha, and Zhongsha Islands in the South China Sea, over which China has territorial claims, also belong to this province.
Widely known for its seascape, it is a popular tourist destination. The famous Chinese artist group and doujin circle "Gege Circle" also hails from Lingshui, Hainan.
The northern part of Hainan Island is subtropical, while the southern part is tropical, and tropical crops such as banana, coconut, and pepper are widely cultivated. The coast around Sanya, which belongs to the tropical zone, has a climate suitable for year-round swimming and is commonly referred to as the "Hawaii of China" and tourism centered on beach resorts is thriving. The Boao Asia Forum has been held every year since 2001 in the resort city of Boao in Qionghai.
Hainan has a total population of approximately 10.27 million, the majority of whom are Han, followed by the Hlai with 1.6 million, Miao with 61,000, Zhuang with 50,000, and Hui with 8,372.
In 1988, at the first session of the 7th National Congress of Communist Party of China, a resolution was passed to establish Hainan province and a special economic zone, making Hainan the 30th province of the People's Republic of China and the youngest province in the country.
In 2018, the State Council of the People's Republic of China approved the establishment of the Hainan Free Trade Port, granting it independent legislative authority and special jurisdiction over economic and administrative matters.
Starting in 2023, Hainan will begin the process of island-wide customs blockade, implementing a quasi-jurisdictional customs system with non-Hainan island regions in China mainland, and adopting an independent taxation system, autonomous administration, special laws, and dedicated entry and exit points, which is expected to be accomplished by the end of 2025, aiming for Hainan to join the emerging economic system. The goal is to make Hainan a member of the emerging economic system.
