Overview
Eurasia (ユーラシア, Yūrashia) is a word formed by combining Europe and Asia. The area includes the Eurasian continent and its neighboring islands.
Geography
The land area is approximately 54,929,000 square kilometers, which is 40.4% of the Earth's land area (including Antarctica) and 10.8% of its total surface area.
Its population is 4.715 billion (2006), 72% of the Earth's total population.
The majority of the population is made up of Eurasia, the largest continent on the planet.
The islands are, in order of area:
- Borneo
- Sumatra
- Honshu
- Britain Island
- Sulawesi
- Java
- Luzon Island
- Mindanao
- Hokkaido Main Island
- Sakhalin Main Island
- Kyushu Island
- Taiwan Island
It is almost entirely surrounded by the sea, with the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Indian Ocean to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Pacific Ocean to the east.
The only land connection with Africa is the Suez Isthmus, now separated by the man-made Suez Canal (when all of Africa is with the two it is known as Afro-Eurasia, Eurafrasia or Afroeurasia). It is traditionally divided into Asia and Europe.
In terms of natural geography, Europe is merely a peninsular land mass at the western end of Eurasia. The majority of its area is in Asia.
The traditional boundary between Asia and Europe, the Ural Mountains, Caucasus Mountains, has not been a major obstacle to the exchange of people and goods.
It has become increasingly meaningless as a result of the existence of the great Russian power (Russian Empire, Soviet Union, Russian Federation) that has straddled the boundary for hundreds of years.
For example, it is not really the case that any statistics or records are compiled separately at the traditional boundary between Asia and Europe.
