Overview
The southernmost part of the Americas when they are divided into North America, Central America, and South America.
The areas of Central America and South America with a strong Latin influence are often called Latin America.
In geographical classification, the continent of South America is the area south of the Isthmus of Panama, where the continent of North and South America is at its narrowest in the middle. In the United Nations classification, the countries of the Americas south of Panama are called South America. Since the definition is south of Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, which is only about 15 km away from the South American continent, is generally classified as Central America, more than 100 km away by sea.
