Blueberry inflation originates from the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. At one point in the story Violet Beauregarde begins chewing an experimental piece of gum against the warnings of the factorys owner, Willy Wonka. The gum eventually turns her completely blue, and causes her to blow up just like a blueberry. Once she’s completely ripe Wonka has her rolled to the juicing room to have the juice squeezed out of her. Violet is later seen leaving the factory and back to her normal human form, but her whole body is permanantly blue.
Blueberry inflation artwork often takes inspiration from the two film adaptations of the book. Very often art will mimic one of those versions of Violets transformation. It’s also common for artists to insert other people in Violets place and have them become a blueberry instead. However there are also works where the blueberry inflation differs greatly from the original story. Different causes and reasons for the inflation can pop up. These might include eating too much blueberry pie, contaminated juice, or simply magic. The subject might also simply be transformed by accident, or they might even desire to become a blueberry. The actual inflation process is where the main focus is. It’s where artists experiment with different shades of blue and different shapes and sizes for their subject to go through as they become a blueberry. It is common for an artist to create a sequence of multiple images showing the process. After becoming ripe, onlookers may tease, compliment, or play with the blueberry. The blueberry might not even be juiced and simply kept as a fruit. The juicing process was not shown in any version of CATCF so there are many different interpretations of it. After juicing the subject might even shown to be altered more than Violet was, with leftover juice adding some extra weight.
While pixiv has a decent amount of blueberry inflation art, it is more common among western artists. Western art sites, especially deviantart, will have a much larger selection.
