Coronavirus diseases (新型コロナウイルス感染症) refers to a new type of coronavirus. The official name in WHO is COVID-19, although it is also the name given by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Infectious Disease Control Law.
Coronavirus diseases are a type of virus that causes the common cold and usually do not cause serious symptoms.
However, it can sometimes mutate and cause serious infections, and the illness that results is called new-type coronavirus infection, novel coronavirus infection disease (新型コロナウイルス感染症, shingata koronauirusu kansenshō), as its known in Japan.
Three types of new coronavirus infections have been treated so far: SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome), and COVID-19.
