Overview
Doraemon (ドラえもん, Doraemon) is a manga, anime, and video game series created by Hiroshi Fujimoto (Fujiko F. Fujio).
It is a nationally popular manga work, and there is hardly anyone in Japan who has not heard of Doraemon, as the anime still broadcast on TV Asahi has become such a long-running program and celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019.
It is also popular worldwide, with many illustrations posted on pixiv but this is probably because Doraemon is such a familiar presence in Japan.
History
The first publication of the manga dates back to December 1969, when it was published simultaneously in six different magazines. In total, 1,344 stories were created in the original series, which are published by Shogakukan under the Tentoumushi (てんとう虫) manga brand, extending to forty-five volumes. However, there is no definite ending for the series, leading people to create non-canon endings for the series.
Its first anime adaptation was made in 1973 aired on Nippon Television Network. It did poorly in ratings and never had any formats for home media. It ran into budget issues during its run with already financial problems from the studio.
Most of this anime is lost media due to almost no acts of preservation with reels being sold off to cover the debt. Production materials where thrown out or destroyed in a kerosene fire.
The more well known anime originally ran from 1979 until 2005. In 1981 the original was rebroadcast but order by Shogakukan to be taken down due to its already bad reputation might effecting the new anime.
The newer anime had quite a few dubs such as a few English dubs for Asia, this is because English is a second primary language in Asia countries.
What is peculiar about one of these many dubs is the changes such as its tile being The Adventures of Albert and Sidney. This one was also in English but only aired in Barbados in late 1980s and early 1990s
Themes
A majority of Doraemon stories are comedies but with lessons regarding values such as honesty, perseverance, courage, family and respect for elders. Various environmental issues are often visited, including homeless animals, global warming, endangered species, deforestation, and pollution.
