Facial performance (顔芸, kaogei), in real life, mainly refers to the art of comedians making people laugh with funny faces.
In manga and anime, facial deformation is a technique in which a character's face is transformed intensely in order to express their emotions more strongly (ex: a cute character suddenly becomes dramatic, or the placement and size of the mouth and eyes become very different from the style of the character).
