Overview編集

First-person (一人称) is one of the pronouns and refers to the speaker themself. Even before the concept of numbers was introduced, many languages had different ways of referring to oneself alone and to multiple people including oneself, and this is considered to be one of the fundamental concepts of identity.

Japanese is considered to be a particularly rich language in terms of variety, and it is common for people to use more than one depending on the situation, the person they are speaking to, their mood and preferences, and other factors. On the other hand, there is no word as versatile as "I" in English or "我" in Chinese, and there is a complication that there is an implicit understanding of choices depending on gender, position, and other factors.
