Overview

A male actors (男優, dan'yū) refers to the male gender in an acting role. They use to be the only gender that were allowed to be an actor making even female characters to be also played by the male gender. There was some cases early on such as Ancient Rome where there was some female stage performers but only a minority or professional women actors in Italy.

Note that its Japanese tag can also refer to male actors that play in a pornographic role (adult film actor).
