Rin Satsuki (冴月 麟) was the third playable character of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil who was cut during production but managed to leave a trace in the source code. An alleged portrait of her (or an otherwise unknown character) appears on Team Shanghai Alice's circle ad in the Comiket when EoSD was first released. Official pronunciation and romanization are unknown.
Rin Satsuki (冴月 麟; さつき りん; さえつき りん; さえづき りん)
Character Overview
In the Circle Ad, Rin wears a large ribbon on her hair with cherry pins and dress-like blouse. She is also holding an erhu upside down. The colours are unknown because the circle Ad is in monochrome.
Although there are no canon evidence to show what Rin really looks like (color-wise mostly), most people go with the Rin Satsuki in the circle cut with blonde hair, red bow, red blouse and pink or white shirt. Associated with Rin are the attack types Flower Sign (花符) and Wind Sign (風符).
Trivia (Not canon)
- Official pronunciation and romanization are unknown. Her name is "冴月 麟", generally pronounced "Satsuki Rin (さつき りん)."
- Unused Embodiment of Scarlet Devil sprites ripped from the game, has shown what looks to be Rin. She's wearing a black blouse.
- Rin has no official theme like any other character, but she does have a fan-made one.
- If you do a text search of the EoSD data files, you can find the name "冴月麟" near the other playable characters.
- Based on a remark by Marisa in her Extra Stage, Rin is theorized to be a nurse, but this is pure speculation. However, in modern Japanese popular culture, the kirin is often conflated with the unicorn (cf. Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter), which has healing powers; this would suggest a connection between kirin and nurses.
- Her name Rin (麟) stands for the mythological creature Kirin, prompting some to believe that she was supposed to be a personification of a kirin. This is a supported by the fact that by the Japanese name order, her name is "Satsuki Rin."
- From the picture, she is shown holding a musical instrument. It could be that she is actually a Tsukumogami (Artifact spirit)
