Overview
Team Shanghai Alice (上海アリス幻樂団, Shanhai Arisu Gengakudan, lit. Shanghai Alice Fantasy Ensemble) is a doujin circle solely organized by ZUN. From 1996 to 1998, it was active as ZUN Soft (幻楽団), a brand of Amusement Makers, an unauthorized circle of Tokyo Denki University, but in 2002, it resumed its activities as Team Shanghai Alice.

Origin
The meaning of Shanghai Alice is East, West and fantasy, and Fantasy Band is the name for being originally intended to go with a music circle.
In another rendering, Shanghai is the image of a city where Western and Eastern cultures mix, and "Alice" is "a child who lived in a concession" and suggests a fairy-tale element.
> Q: What was your intention in choosing a circle name that combines the words "Shanghai" and "Alice," which evoke images of East and West?
> A: The basic idea is a blend of Japanese and Western culture. I saw Shanghai in my mind as a city with a mixture of Western and Eastern cultures, so I put Shanghai in there. It is the same as putting Tokyo in a company name even if it is not in Tokyo.
> What is Alice? Is she a child who lived in a concession? But it is more like a fairy tale, isn't it? Alice is. I tried to express the meaning of "Shanghai Alice" with words that I know well: East, West and fantasy, that kind of thing.
> By the way, I added "Phantom band" because we originally planned to go as a music circle (laughs).
