Overview編集

The Battle Cats , (にゃんこ大戦争, Nyanko Daisensou, lit. "Nyanko Great War") is a tower defense game released by the PONOS corporation in 2012. Originally known as Battle Cats , the game was up from its November 15, 2012 release to January 10, 2013 until being released September 17, 2014 as The Battle Cats.

The game's gameplay involves summoning cats for a specific cost to protect your cat bases from the multitudes of enemies the game has that range from the simple enemies of early game up to behemoths of high power. The game currently has over 80 Million downloads and is currently over 10 years old (for the original Japanese release).

The game also has multiple rereleases being The Battle Cats POP! for the Nintendo 3DS (released June 27, 2016 in the US) and The Battle Cats Unite (released December 9, 2021 in the US) and many spin off games such as Go! Gameplay編集

Story Sections編集

The game has five major story sections being Empire of Cats, Into the Future, Cats of the Cosmos, The Aku Realms, and Legend Stages. The first three story sections are broken up into three chapters, each of witch being more difficult to the last.

Empire of Cats is the only one of the three main story chapters to be different between versions, as it covers the whole Earth in The Battle Cats but only the Japanese Archipelago in The Battle Cats. The Aku Realms is accessible through the Empire of Cats chapter select screen and contains stages that range in difficulty from that of Into the Future to late Uncanny Legends. Legend Stages contains many types of stages such as event stages, collaboration stages, material farming stages, the challenge stage, and Legend Stories.

Legend Stories has three chapters being Stories of Legend, Uncanny Legends, and Zero Legends. The main screen for selecting these chapters also has two other sections, the Catclaw Dojo which has one standard trial stage and event trials for players to get prizes from and the Underground Labyrinth which is a gauntlet of 99 stages where certain cats in your team will be trapped after completing each stage.

Battle System編集

In order to play a stage, the player needs to have a set up, which can be created or edited under the equip section on the cat base screen, that can consist up to ten cats. The top row of this setup can have an activated cat combo (if the proper units are there) which can affect the outcome of a battle and this set up can also be affect by an present restrictions on units such as a max unit cost limit or top row only restriction that are present on some stages, such as most Cats of the Cosmos stages.

During a battle, the player has to defend their cat base with the set up of cats they chose to bring from a set of enemies of varying difficulty and abilities. As a battle progresses, the player can upgrade their Worker Cat (on the left) to gain a higher money cap and fire their Cat Cannon to damage and knock back enemies (can be changed out to have different effects).

Items can also be brought into a battle that can help the player, such as the Cat CPU which will act as an Auto Battler sending out cat units for the player. The player's set up can also be set to one of two styles during a battle (from the pause menu), the first being the old style that requires the player to swap between each row with one on top of the other or the new style which has the rows in the same styles as the Equip screen.

Cat Base編集

The cat base is where most of the games functions are located, such as User Rank, the event stage schedule, information about events and updates, the start button which gives the player access to stages (or stage list in Legend Stages), Upgrade button (which allows the player to upgrade and true form units), and the Equip button to build or edit set ups for stages.

The cat base screen also shows the player's XP amount for unit upgrading and Cat Food which is used to buy items, XP, cat units, or continues on stages that allow for it. Most cat food can be earned free in the game buy completing certain missions or maps or can be bought for money. Below the Equip button are the buttons for the Menu (which contains earned Meow Medals, the Cat and Enemy guides, and the player's play time information), the Gamatoto section (which for item gathering and Cat Base upgrades), and the Missions section. Next to that is the Gatcha and Cat Storages. The Gatcha comes in three versions, the standard Cat Capsules (upgrades to Cat Capsule+) which is the source to boost the levels on he normal cats and Cat Base features, the Rare Cat capsules where high rarity units can be acquired, and Event Capsules which only occurs at specific times and can give battle items, XP, and cat units.

The last major feature of the Cat Base screen is the cat present on it (which can change on events such as to Tank Cat with the 10 1/2 Year Anniversary event) which can provide tips or tell you when a Zombie Outbreak has occurred in a main story chapter.
