Overview
Folk costume (民族衣装, minzoku ishō) refers to costumes have been handed down uniquely by each of the world's ethnic groups and tribes.
They strongly reflect the lifestyles, cultural forms, and history of each region. The appearance is attractive to other native groups as well.
Some of the patterns and decorations seen in each region are derived from local traditions and beliefs, and can be considered as a "wearable good-luck charm" that has a meaning beyond that of clothing (protection from disaster and prayer).
In the modern age, when clothes are widely used for everyday wear, they are often worn on special occasions such as "Hare no Hi" (special occasions for celebrations). It is also often used as a tourist resource (e.g., for a kimono-wearing experience).
