Overview
Ingredients (食材, shokuzai, lit. "food ingredient") are the foods used in cooking.
Since there are a variety of ingredients and food in different cultures, it is not possible to label them as ghetto food or barbaric. If it is a food that the common people of the region like to eat on a daily basis, it may be surprisingly tasty. It is worth a try if you have the chance.
Besides mere custom, there are many people who do not eat certain foods for religious reasons or personal beliefs.
In particular, there are many taboos related to meat, and in past Japan, where it was not customary to eat the meat of livestock, there was a custom of discriminating against slaughterhouse workers. Even today, this is a cause of religious conflict, as Muslims and Jews looking down on Christians as pork-eaters.
