Overview
Entertainment (エンターテインメント, 娯楽) original meaning meant a show as in a performance, a sideshow, etc., especially one in which the performer's skills are mainly appreciated, and refers to sports, stage plays, concerts, and performances.
In a broader sense, it is also a general term for entertainment works in general, including manga, anime, novels, movies, and TV programs.
Implicit understanding
Since most of them are in the customer business dealing with audiences, viewers, and readers, there is a kind of unspoken understanding.
Many of them are similar to the manners in pubs, but the taboos include blatant hate and incitement, political and religious topics that clearly deviate from the category of entertainment, and teasing of sports, subculture, and celebrities. These things are likely to cause anger and laughter from the general public, and if they become too much, they can lead to being hung out to dry in the industry. Before that, it is natural for customers to say, "You're ruining the atmosphere" if they are looking for "entertainment" and the provider gives them a self-indulgent or subjective trifecta.
However, it is true that such satire and current events themselves can be very popular if they hit the right spot (as long as they are done to the right degree), and it is easy to gain sympathy and support from a certain class of people, and it is also easy to gain ecstasy from being able to look at things from the top. For this reason, there is no end to the number of creators and performers who easily turn to it when they are at a loss in their creativity or work. However, many of them end up with a self-righteous artistic style, producing low-quality works that eventually fail to go beyond the second or third step.
On the contrary, those who blatantly (or poorly) engage in this kind of behavior have, in other words, abandoned the technique of successfully "incorporating" their own principles and self-expression into their creations.
Programs and works that dare to deal with this kind of material include Shōten, Gin Tama, Saint Young Men, etc. These programs and works are successful because they do not deviate from the category of "art" or "work", and the quality of the art or work itself is high to begin with.
