Madoka Kaname is the main heroine of the show "Puella Magi Madoka Magica". A 14-year-old girl who comes from an extremely loving family. Her life however changes when she encounters the Puella Magi Homura and the familiar Kyubey, who offers to transform her into a Puella Magi herself.

A girl who sees herself as a person without any talent, but kind and gentle. After her encounter with Kyuubey, initially she had no idea on what kind of wish to make at first. But after seeing Mami fighting against witches, wants to be a wonderful and cool Puella Magi like her. Following Mami's death, she becomes uncertain about becoming a Puella Magi, becoming more so as the dark secrets of the Puella Magi are revealed to her. She always wish that everyone would get along, sometimes even putting her own life at risk to help others. Although her naitevity sometimes worsen the situation.
In previous timelines that Akemi Homura had experienced, Madoka had become a Puella Magi, wielding a magic bow and arrow. Kyubey remarked that Madoka is capable of becoming the strongest Puella Magi and subsequently most terrible witch, capable of destroying the world and giving him the energy he desires, which is why he is most interested in forming a contract with her.
Before Akemi Homura became a Puella Magi, Madoka at the original timeline was a much more laid back, confident girl compared to herself on the current timeline. However not as powerful as herself in the current timeline. She died in the battle against Walpurgis Night, but due to Homura making a wish where she wants to fix the encounter with Madoka, Homura managed to turn back in time one month before, hence negated her death but as a side effect, due to her wish formed a karma which adds on whenever Madoka dies and indefinite time looping, the potential in Madoka stacks, which result in her having the most potential of becoming the strongest Puella Magi, as well as being the strongest Witch.
In the final episode, Madoka wish was revealed to be able to go to all times and stop all witches from being born. This changes the very fabric of reality where Madoka is ascended to godhood, but in return nobody remembers except for Homura. However, in this new reality, demons caused by distortions form, thus still giving Puella Magi purpose.

- The first character of her last name (鹿) means "deer". The last character (目) means "eye."
- Her last name can also be used as a first name.
- Her last name sounds same as (要) the word means "keystone" or "hub".
- Her first name is written in hiragana, which has no particular meaning. However, when written in kanji, it can mean "round" or "tranquil" (円).
- Madoka has many stuffed animals similar in appearance to Kyubey in her room.
- It is revealed in the Drama CD that takes place during the events of Episode 10 that the reason she became a Puella Magi was to save the life of a cat from being run over by a car.
