Overview
Dessin (デッサン, dessan) is French for drawing or sketch. This can refer to a drawing of an object drawn mainly in only one shade of black, such as pencil, conté, charcoal, etc. It is also the act of drawing itself. However, in some cases, simple coloring may be applied, so it does not necessarily mean only black and white drawings.
In Japanese, it is also known as "sobyō" (素描). It is one of the most basic methods of practice to cultivate one's drawing ability, which is a fundamental skill for those who aspire to art education and the art profession. Basically, it is a process of faithfully capturing an object as it is.
