Mai Dancing

Mai (舞) is what dancing was called during ancient Japan. It is also used as a name.

Overview

Mai (舞), in the traditional Japanese language, means "turning motion to a melody", or "movements across a stage with shuffling feet" (quoted from: Kojien Fifth Edition, p. 2489, "Mai"). In contrast, odori (踊) represents the dynamic movement of bouncing to the rhythm.
