"ヘタリア" is a name cradled from the slang word that a military mania in Japan talked about weak Italy of prewar days ironically.

There was a slang word "へたれ = hetare" that meant "Mercy" and "It is weak" in Japanese, and "Hetare" and "Italy" were combined, and the name "Hetalia" arose.

In another abbreviation, the initial of "Axis powers Hetalia" is taken, and it is called, "APH".

The characters who personify the nation are drawing the history and the joke of the culture in this work with comedy that makes the history and the culture a motif by calm touch.

Characters are Italy, Germany in the pivot country, and chiefly Japan. The United States America, Britain, France, Russia, and China in the union country are centered. Other personified Europe and America, Asia, informal nation, climate, organization, city, and ancient state, etc. appear, too.

The name of a person besides it exists though the alias of the character is officially a name of a country, too.

It was initially created as an online webcomic, and so far three tankoubons have been published by Gentosha Comics. English translations of the first two volumes have been published by Tokyopop in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Wed popular comics on the Internet, further raised the popularity of the book form in 2008. Animation and drama in 2009 CD, the film also, even across North America. The Shingurupureigemu "Hetalia school"("学園ヘタリア") was also created.

Fandom in pixiv

Hetalia has proven to be extremely famous amongst the females (both Japan and Worldwide), and as of June, 2011, 330035 illustrations related to Hetalia have been submitted to pixiv.

However, since the contents of Hetalia contain aspects about the world and its culture, as well as involving its fandom and memes with fandoms outside Hetalia (for example, World Cup), many dramas occured behind the deriviative creation scene and it has since called for many revisions and control (restriction) on the creation itself.

Contents that reflect real international issues, war, politics, disasters, world sports event (World Cup, Olympics etc) and many more will be considered by the viewers as unpleasant and imprudence. Usually dramas and arguements will occur when illustrations that contain sensitive issues are posted.
