The dark history refers to the pages expounding on days past, which lie hidden until the day.
Origins
Initially a term that comes up in ∀ Gundam franchise.
Refers to the history sealed off by Turn A Gundam's 月光蝶 Moonlight Butterfly/Gekkouchou.
In the events of the show, 宇宙世紀 epoch's "mobile suits" are dug up in numbers and get set for battle anew.
Another source refers to the enormous array of recordings preserved on the Moon, where, besides the expected records of the space age, there also are G, W, X's Another Series.
Whether SEED and other 『∀』+ series currently count remains unknown, but ∀ means "everything", so that would count as more dark history, as well.
However, 00 is paradoxical enough about the timelines that it not count.
Then this data was sternly observed as one that would "once again bring about the war to humanity", so only the few chosen had access to it.
Dark History as per Internet Slang
Meaning records of past, this idiom pervades the Internet as well. It's mainly a history you would like to undo, want to forget.
In practice its usage varies and is described by the following examples.
For people that are currently actors, famous people, singers, sportsmen etc.:
- children's shows, night shows, commercials done at the early stages of career
- début single being an anime tie-up
- accidents or troubles made before gaining fame or during a vacation
- random idols at TV shows plainly confessing they had done shoplifting and the shops then going under
- B・B's initial design → エロズリー
- competed with a team of creative military men and lost 阪神タイガース
- before choosing drafts, a role in a gay video got dug up TDN
...and other things the people who don't have to be the person in question hide any data about with great caution.
Anime, games, etc.:
- Mobile Suit Gundam SEED the movie, vague on the matter in the end.
- Tomio Yoshiyuki's view on Mobile Suit Z Gundam and Mobile Suit V Gundam
- Mobile Suit Z Gundam went a really different way in remake, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ never succeeded
- All the products by Alan Smithee
- The much-discussed, budgeted in solid millions yet never sold well and down in oblivion except for its fate, Opoona
- Idol Master XENOGLOSSIA, as far as every hardcore IM@s fan around is concerned
- In a multiple-series product, the series whose sales peaked in comparison
- The large-scale projects that started pompously and failed miserably
- Remakes of highly-rated games and films
- All things forever to-be released or to-be continued
- Things finished at chapter one.
The production side may consider these dark history or not, but it is mostly part of the fandom that deems them ones.
Nevertheless, people that do like the product or the whole series find dubbing products "dark history" a bad idea. When mentioned, it may cause mass pain in the rear and land blow on friendships, so do take heed.
