Biology
Charizard is the final evolution of Charmander, one of the starter Pokémons in Pokémon Red and Blue (Red and Green in Japanese version).
It is a draconic, bipedal Pokémon, whose body color is primarily orange with a cream underside from the chest to the tip of its tail, which burns with a sizable flame. It is said that when it is angry, its tail's fire will burns in white color.
There are two large wings with teal undersides sprout from its back, with the horn-like appendage juts out from the third joint of each wing. Charizard can fly up to 1400 meters in heights.
Charizard flies in search of powerful opponents to battle, and its fire will burn hotter as it gains experience.
Its fiery breath is capable of melting boulders, massive glaciers, and has been known to accidentally cause forest fires. (Though, this is never happen in the video game series, but occasionally happens in the anime series)
In Games
Charizard first appears in Pokémon Red and Blue. (Red and Green in Japan) Because it is the final evolution of the starter Pokémon, the only ways to get Charizard are to get evolve from Charmeleon, trades with other players, and by breeding.
Weirdly, In the first Pokémon games, Charizard cannot learn the skill 'Fly'. {The Pikachu version allows it to learn it by TM/HM)
It is weak against Rock Type Pokémons.
In the 6th generation Pokémon games (Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), Charizard is one of the only Pokémon alongside Mewtwo to receive two Mega Evolutions.
Charizard also appears in the 3rd Super Smash Bros. installment as one of the Pokémon trainer's Pokémon. Charizard was appears again in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and 3DS as a solo fighter, with Mega Evolution (As Mega Charizard X) as its final smash.
In Anime
In Main Anime Series
Ash's Charizard
In the main TV anime series, Ash had obtained a Charmander in episode 11 of the original series. It evolved into Charmeleon in episode 43 and quickly evolved into Charizard in Episode 46.
Ash's Charizard, after evolved from being Charmeleon, is somewhat rebellious in the anime's early run, as he didn't obeys Ash and only battled Pokémon that would pose a challenge. This was changed when in episode 105 (107 in Japan) where Ash tries to defrost him while Charizard was frozen solid. From then on, Charizard becomes one of Ash's most trustworthy Pokémon.
Charla
The female Charizard under the ownership of Liza (Sieg in Japanese version, as Liza is Charla's Japanese name) appears in episode 134 of the original series.
She was appears again in episode 253 of the original series and shown in a flashback in episode 116 of the Best Wishes series.
Other Charizards
There are few Charizards that make appearances in the main anime series:
- In episode 248 of the original series, Jessie use a Charizard she borrowed from Battle Park to battle against Ash's Totodile.
- In episode 128 of the Advance Generation series, Clark use Charizard and Quilava against Ash's Grovyle and Glalie.
- In episode 177 of the Advance Generation series, Delibird give Jessie and James a Charizard and an Aggron, with Jessie getting Charizard and James getting Aggron. However, Delibird took the two Pokémon away at the end of the episode as they were meant for Cassidy and Butch.
In specials
Don
Don is a Charizard under the ownership of Corey Demario (Tsuyoshi in Japanese version) appears in special episode 'Those Darn Electabuzz!'. It was given to Benny, Corey's younger brother
It lost its fire and ability to fly. It regain those abilities at the end of the special and was given back to Corey.
Alain's Charizard
Charizard is Alain's only known Pokémon, which he has owned since it was a Charmander, when Alain was still one of Professor Sycamore's assistants.
With Charizardite X, it is capable of Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X.
Red's Charizard
Red obtained Charizard as a Charmander from Professor Oak when he went out on his journey.
It evolved into a Charizard some time after Red defeated Koga between file 2 and file 3 of the mini series.
It Mega Evolved into Mega Charizard X during the fight against Mewtwo. It is the first time the Mega Evolution make its anime debut.
