Overview
GMOD Problem (GMOD問題, GMODmondai) efers to the uproar on pixiv and pixiv encyclopedia caused by the mass posting on pixiv of images created using GMOD (Garry's Mod), SFM (SourceFilmMaker), or Source Engine. All of these softwares are free on Steam which gets a lot of people to use them and post such works.
The large number of 3DCGC works posted by these softwares radicalized some users who did not like 3DCG works, causing them to tag and vandalize the works in question and to disrupt articles on the pixiv encyclopedia to slander gmodders, resulting in tagging wars and editing wars between general users.
Cause
GMOD and SFM are sandbox games that allows users to place and play with various objects and ragdolls in a 3D space. Tens of thousands of objects are available, including those shared by others in the Steam Workshop, allowing users without 3DCG skills to create and share 3DCG-like works. This has led to users posting large numbers of works using GMOD and SFM, which is almost like search obstruction for users who do not like 3DCG works.
This situation has made some users angry, and they have reported the works and users one after another for copyright infringement. This was a clear violation of Infringement of Copyrights, etc. in Article 14. Prohibited Conduct of the pixiv Inc. Service Master Terms of Use. Although some users left the site due to a succession of reports, some still continue to post their works on pixiv.
As the repeated teasing of mass submissions and simultaneous reporting of works continued, some users who had antipathy toward GMOD-related works turned into militant GMOD antis, and began to paste a large number of troll tags on these works. However, the troll tags attached caused search interference, and a tagging war broke out between them and ordinary users.
In addition, the above actions are likely to violate the pixiv Terms of Service and cause a new search obstruction problem. Furthermore, the slanderous acts against gmodders may be regarded by third parties as more malicious than those of users who make mass postings. No matter how much you hate these works, you should not engage in any of the above actions.
Subsequently
Extremist antagonists engaged in article spamming, etc., other users considered them as trolls and reported them to the management one after another, and their accounts were suspended. Some users resisted by acquiring multiple accounts, but because their actions were in violation of the terms of use, they were reported to the management again, and their accounts were suspended again. The Japanese articles that were built in the series of disturbances were all blanched as unnecessary or vandalized articles.
However, as of July 12, 2022, some extremist antis have resurrected and are vandalizing articles, such as improperly retracting this article and others, adding extremely negative, biased, and critical statements and false content about gmodders, and creating a barrage of slanderous articles, and there is once again an editing war between users demanding neutrality in articles and gmodders within the Japanese articles. An editorial battle is occurring between the users who want the articles to be neutral again.
Impact
The uproar has resulted in the mass disparagement of GMOD/SFM related disparaging terms and the pasting of troll tags on related works, which has caused overseas users who are unaware of the situation to accidentally attach these disparaging terms and troll tags to their articles. As a result, the Japanese articles have been forced to take measures such as adding a cautionary note in English to the summary on the beginning of the article.
Problematic behavior on the part of gmodder
However, it is not as if the gmodders side was completely blameless. As mentioned above, the cause of the disturbance was the large number of works posted that used these programs, and it is true that GMOD/SFM related works dominated the works section, almost obstructing searches, and that they posted works that violated the terms of use. Because of this, gmodders are sometimes considered by other users to be an unaware vandal.
Some users also made suspicious edits to the pixiv encyclopedia, such as spamming the pixiv encyclopedia with articles promoting certain gmodder users. This is in violation of 15. Posting Posted Information for the purpose of commercial advertising, publicity, or inducement (except in cases specifically permitted by the Company) in Article 14 Prohibited Conduct of the pixiv Inc. Service Master Terms of Use. For this reason, these articles were also blanched as vandalism for the purpose of spamming.
Conclusion
It is true that gmodders has engaged in problematic behavior such as mass submissions of there work, resulting in search interference and spamming articles. It is not surprising that some users are antagonistic toward it. However, some of them, especially the militant GMOD antis, were very bad. The militant GMOD antis tag vandalized GMOD/SFM-related works, resulting in new search obstructions. The act of disrupting articles aimed at slandering gmodders was also viewed as problematic by other users. In the end, while the militant GMOD antis disliked and hated gmodders, the behavior of the militant GMOD antis was also exactly the same as the problematic behavior on the part of gmodder. In that sense, the behavior of the extremist GMOD antis is truly a boomerang, and is said that they are in the same hole as gmodders.
