The internet is a term that refers to the computer network itself, and the web is its application (applied technology), but in everyday language, the term "Internet" is widely misused to refer to the World Wide Web or WWW browser.
One of the reasons for this misunderstanding is that the start-up icon of the WWW browser that came with the Japanese version of Windows 95 was labeled "Internet".
