Summary.

The meme was coined by Oxford University biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene. Also translated as Mimetic Child.

It refers to information that is copied and modified from mind to mind among people, and is analysed as a variety of information that forms society and culture. For example, it is a variety of information copied from person to person, such as habits, skills and stories.

Although Dawkins' biological definition of a meme states that "****memes are the basic unit of cultural transmission and reproduction", the definition varies widely depending on the field and culture to which it applies.

Internet memes.

In particular, what is called an Internet meme in foreign countries is almost synonymous with the Japanese term "story".

A collage or derivative work is "made into a character's statement despite the fact that it is not actually true", or "interesting behaviour" that occurs suddenly and is made into a story.

As can be seen from the word "internet" in the title, this meme has been expanding rapidly since the 2000s, when the internet and various social networking services began to spread.

As a general trend,

  1. It becomes popular in a community in a very small part of the community
  2. It is brought into other communities (electronic noticeboard, SNS, etc.).
  3. They are carried out at the same time (or a little later) and become popular all at once.

This is a movement like image.

Examples of images include Abe Takakazu and Solitary Gourmet kora, while examples of phrases such as "Komei no trap" originally became popular in the Futaba Channel community and later became popular in other communities such as 2channel, Nico Nico Douga and TwitterTwitter and other communities. Therefore, the above-mentioned stories can be said to be typical memes.

It is also characterised by the fact that the connotations of words change or new meanings are added in the process of information transmission due to the flow of the community, etc. (→wall don).

He was the designer of the 2011 hit RPG Skyrim, and was the person who wrote the meme-ified line "I got an arrow in the knee..." in the game.Emil Pagliarulo, the man who wrote the meme and who wrote the line "I got an arrow in the knee...", reflected on the popularity of the "knee arrow" in a later interview: "I didn't realise it at the time, but I think the common thing with memes that go viral is that fans can use in any situation" and "The original meaning is not really important, it's how funny it becomes when applied to other situations that counts. The point is how funny it becomes when applied to other situations."The "arrow in the knee" meme is funny because it's ultimately used in a way that has nothing to do with Skyrim or the Guard at all," he theorises (see Article).
