'Pokémon: The First Movie' (Simply known as 'Mewtwo Strikes Back', its original Japanese title) is the very first Pokémon anime movie, released in July 18, 1998 in Japan, and in US on November 12, 1999.

It is released in Japan under the title Pocket Monsters the Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back (劇場版ポケットモンスター ミュウツーの逆襲) and its distribution in Japan is handled by Toho.


The movie is accompanied by a Pikachu Short Pikachu's Vacation.


In Japanese, the movie's opening theme song is a special version of 'To be a Pokémon Master' by Rica Matsumoto, and its ending theme is 'Together With the Wind' by Sachiko Kobayashi.


About the Complete Edition編集

When Mewtwo Strikes Back was made back then, there are two version: the theatrical version and the TV special airing version. The latter has the first 15 minutes additional footages which is now known as The Story of Mewtwo's Origin. Said footages is a adaption of the CD drama, further explaining Mewtwo's origin, its anguish and why it hates humans.


When the movie was theatrically released in the US, some CG edits were made to it.


Those CG edits, along with The Story of Mewtwo's Origin, were included in the Complete Edition version of Mewtwo Strikes Back home release in Japan. Since then, all home re-releases of Mewtwo Strikes Back were using the Complete Edition of the movie.


Plot編集

Mewtwo, is a artifical Pokémon who is created from Mew's DNA by Team Rocket. Days passed and while Mewtwo do dirty jobs for Team Rocket, it is distress by a reason that why it (Mewtwo) lives. One day, Mewtwo, who developed a strong hatred for humans and despised the Pokémon who served humans, breaks out from Team Rocket. Mewtwo decided to strikes back against humans.


Meanwhile, Ash and his friends recieved a invitation and a hologram mail from a Dragonnite. The woman in the hologlam told the trainers to head to Old Shore Wharf in order to get to an island fortress called New Island. Ash and his friends decided to go to Old Shore Wharf to get to the island.


Little did Ash know, It is the invitation from Mewtwo...

  • Some dialogues and character portrayal in the English version of the movie is different than the Japanese version, such as Mew and Mewtwo themselves. Because of this, some people in the overseas prefer the Japanese version of this movie.
  • A TV special, known as Mewtwo Returns (ミュウツー 我ハココニアリ), is the sequel to this movie.
