Overview
North Korea (北朝鮮, Kita Chōsen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (朝鮮民主主義人民共和国, Chōsen Minshu Shugi Jinmin Kyōwakoku), is a socialist republic located in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. Although the country's name contains the words democratic (democracy) and republic, it is essentially a one-party dictatorship ruled by the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), under the hereditary dictatorship of the Kim family.
In Japan, which recognizes South Korea as the sole legitimate government of the Korean Peninsula, the country is generally referred to as North Korea. In English-speaking countries, the country is also commonly referred to as North Korea. The North Koreans themselves do not like the name North Korea and call it Republic of Korea.
