Shinki

Shinki (神綺) is a character from Touhou Project. She is the final boss of the 5th and last installment of the PC-98 games, Touhou Kaikidan ~ Mystic Square.

Overview

Shinki (神綺) is a character in the Touhou Project franchise who appears as the final boss of the last PC-98 game in the series, Mystic Square. She is a god.

She is the creator of Makai, the demon realm in Touhou, and all the beings inside of it. Unlike most other gods in Touhou however, she is not part of the Yaoyorozu no Kami (8 million gods in Shinto).

In Mystic Square, she takes it upon herself to punish the protagonist for wreaking havoc in her world after they went to investigate the sudden influx of demons in the human world. Shinki was not the instigator of the incident though, as the influx of demons was caused by a privately-owned travel agency. In the ending the problem did not cease to exist as demons still came to the human world regardless.

References to her have been made years later in the Windows-era of Touhou as well. In the 12th installment, Undefined Fantastic Object, the protagonists enter Makai again after all these years and the game's final boss, Byakuren Hijiri, uses a danmaku pattern which closely resembles one of Shinki's patterns.

Similar to how Mima is very popular despite being a PC-98 character in Touhou, Shinki too, is extraordinarily popular for a PC-98 character.

Appearance

She has long white hair and to her left she tied it into a side ponytail with red hair bobbles. Her eye color is the same as her hair, however because the hair was shaded with a blue tint, artists often draw her with light blue eyes as well.

She wears a very long multilayered red dress that covers everything up to her feet that has white, patterned ends on each layer. She also seems to wear a white turtleneck sweater underneath.

She has six massive wings that she can manifest that are either pure white, or black (Also shown as purple) with red markings on them.

Personality

She mostly speaks in a composed and mature manner, even hearing the protagonist out after they angered her by having wrecked havoc in her world. She is very caring for her creations and respects their wishes.

She is also very prideful in her strength and claims that she is the most powerful being in existence. She sees herself being above the protagonist and calls them out for their impunity towards her.

Relationships

Yumeko

She states that Yumeko is one of her strongest creations and Yumeko directly serves her. She listens to Yumeko's wishes.

Alice Margatroid

It is unknown what the relationship between her and Shinki is. In PC-98, Alice seems to be a lot younger than her Windows counterpart. (Also often called Lolice due to this) However, her backstory in the Windows era states that Alice used to be a human, not a demon. So whether or not Alice was created by Shinki too, remains unclear. They do not interact with each other in the main work, nor do they reference each other.

Byakuren Hijiri

Byakuren replicates one of her attacks and was sealed in Makai. It is not known if the two have actually ever met.

Makai Residents

She is the creator of Makai and everything inside of it, so it is safe to assume that characters who are native to Makai were created by her.

Etymology

Her name is Shinki (神綺). Shin (神) means "god", and ki (綺) means either "fine thin silk", "figured cloth", "elegant", or "beautiful".

AN ORDEAL FROM GOD is a theme for a fangame, however it was composed by ZUN so it is widely accepted to be her second theme.

Trends in Fan Works of Shinki

In fanworks, she is often portrayed as a motherly figure towards the other Makai Residents, as she has created them. Especially popular are portrayals of her being Alice's mother, due to her nature as the god who created all in Makai.
As the final boss of the PC-98 era and her status as the God of Makai, she is often portrayed as extremely powerful and has been featured as a final boss in multiple secondary creations.
Because she believed Mima's lie in Mystic Square, she is sometimes portrayed as gullible too.
